So, Black, Red, and Tortoiseshell are our base colors for any other colors. However, since females have two X chromosomes, they can be Black, Red, or what may be considered the third base color – Tortoiseshell. Why? Well, that is because they only have one X chromosome. Male cats can be Black or Red, but not both. Those colors are Black and Red, aka Orange. There are only two primary colors when all the modifying genes are stripped away.
